Amazing Gulzar on zindagi:

Ahista chal zindagi, abhi kai karz chukana baaki hai.

Kuch dard mitana baaki hai, kuch farz nibhana baaki hai.

Raftaar mein tere chalne se kuchh rooth gaye, kuch chhut gaye.

Roothon ko manana baaki hai, roton ko hasana baki hai.

Kuch hasraatein abhi adhuri hain, kuch kaam bhi aur zaruri hai.

Khwahishen jo ghut gayi is dil mein, unko dafnana baki hai.

Kuch rishte ban kar toot gaye, kuch judte-judte chhut gaye.

Un tootte-chhutte rishton ke zakhmon ko mitana baki hai.

Tu aage chal main aata hoon, kya chor tujhe ji paunga?

In saanson par haqq hai jinka, unko samjhaana baaki hai.

Happy Diwali!

It is raining offers,

The skies have opened up.

People with deep coffers,

Are pushing their products!

All things needed for life!

Reason for life itself!

Things I can't live without,

Which, till now, I didn't have!

Existence was a void,

Which now needs to be filled;

Can't think of life devoid

Of vital essentials!

The ads scream out at me,

I'm missing out on life!

Missing prosperity,

I reach out for my purse!

All my wishes are Wants,

All my Wants, desperate Needs!

All my Needs are for Now.

And Now is but a click!

All the products are rushed,

I consume by the morrow!

Once I buy and it's reached,

My hunger is for more!

More begat want for more,

A pity, could've bought more!

I just bought the day before,

Sigh! Yesterday is gone!

There'll be no void in life,

Since all gaps will be filled,

With things that I can buy,

Now I feel fulfilled!

The God is in his sanctum;

From within, he rules one and all.

The priests guard him, and chant their mantrams,

Drawing power from the Supreme God!

The worshipers queue up to pay

Homage and offer their Worship,

For his grace or displeasure mean

A lot to them, and their well-being!

Established rituals known to all,

They mouth the chants to keep him happy;

Cover him with garlands and flowers,

and prostrate, gaze adoringly!

There are festival days well marked,

When All Hands meet to tow the chariot;

They pay obeisance in Open House,

Bow to him, and sing his praises!

Every one knows the liturgy,

The right words of song and praise.

Every one bows to the clergy,

Who in turn, ensure they obey!

Everyone bows, everyone scrapes,

The temple bells are ringing loud!

For this is the God whose Judgment Day

is near; not in some future, but now!

Sahir Ludhianvi was a poet who could look at things from entirely different angle. A small example is his poem Taj Mahal. When Shakeel Badayuni wrote:

इक शहंशाह ने बनवा के हसीं ताज महल
सारी दुनिया को मोहब्बत के निशानी दी है

मजबूर पेंशन

ए मेरी पेंशन 
आज तू सुन 
तेरे मिलने की ख़ुशी मे 
क्यूँ बज उठती है
उदासी की धुन.

भूली तो न होगी तू 
वह पहली मुलाकात 
पूरा फंड ले कर मेरा
तूने पकड़ा था हाथ 
तेरे जन्मदाता की थी गारंटी
कि हर नए वेतन समझोते पर
तेरा नया मूल रूप होगा 
सदा नया स्वरूप होगा.

मेरी शक्की बीवी को भरोसा न था
में जानती हूँ तुम्हरी पुरानी आदत 
पैसा हमेशा नए रूप पर लुटाते हो 
और, उधार लेने मेरे मायके घुस जाते हो 
मैंने समझाया ,भाग्यवान
बैंक अधिकारी, सभी नेता कह रहें हैं 
मजबूर बुढ़ापे में कभी 
ये साथ न छोड़ेगी , 
वक्त के साथ दोड़ेगी 
मान जा तू , तेरे पापा भी कह रहें हैं [

पर यह क्या हुआ
तू जितनी थी पहले दिन 
उतनी है अब तक
न जाने रहेगी ऐसे कब तक
वादा इक निभा न पाई
रिवीजन तो दूर ,
महंगाई भत्ते को 
खुद में समां न पाई

तुझ से परेशां मेरी बीवी 
कोसती है सदा 
और देखो नए रूप की अदा 
सर्फ की जगह
देसी साबुन ला रहे हो
और उसी से धो कर मुंह 
गुसलखाने से बाहर आ रहे हो ,
बादल तो खूब बरसतें हैं 
पर पानी से पकोड़े तलूं कैसे
भुने चने टूटे दांतों से चबा कर 
गीत सावन के गाऊ कैसे
अपडेशन, अपडेशन 
के लारे कब तक देते रहोगे
तख्ती पकड़ नामुराद की,
बैंक के बाहर गूंगे बन 
कब तक खड़े रहोगे

नादान पत्नी के सुन ताने 
पेंशन मेरी फूट पड़ी 
सुनो
जिस दिन बैंक मैं आयी, 
दुर्भाग्य था मेरा ,
हथिया लिया था
मुझे वित्त के दीवानों ने
जिनकी देहलीज पर 
राजन भी माथा टेकते हैं 
क्यूँ , मौन नेता
और 
आँख मूंदे बैंक अधिकारी
षड़यंत्र ये सचिवों का भांप न पाए.

नार्थ ब्लाक में 
नागों का बाड़ा है
कुंडली मारे बैठें है 
देश के खज़ाने पर
बैंक क्या, 
देश पूरा उनका अखाडा है .

खुल के खेलतें है बैंक फण्ड से
बसता है उनका परिवार कार्पोरेट जगत से 
उधार खाये जा रहें है लेके बैंकों से 
देश के हित में है सस्ता कर्ज
लोन चुकाना नहीं उनका फ़र्ज़ 
एन पी ए तो है बैंकों का पुराना मर्ज़ 
बैंकों में अपडेशन से देश डूब जाए गा 
अपडेशन सिर्फ सरकारी है 
बैंकों के लिए बीमारी है .

अफ़सोस, मैं तुम्हारे लिए अपडेट हो न पायी 
मैं मजबूर ,वादा एक निभा न पायी

of a land blessed with  nature's exploding radiance

flowers, songs of birds, plentiful harvest

flowing waters, buoyant play of boats in  lakes

dancing maids, culinary delight  in every home

the adornment of the body,  dreams in every heart

living in the moment, the ecstasy of true, total love.

 

Let's celebrate our  ardent longing for a new world of joy

for a world that now  lives only in songs and stories

for homes where hearts don't bleed and sorrow isn’t  the rule

for the  end of the stupid  reign of political  violence and fraud

for a magic wand that can wipe away the cruelty of power

for the breaking of every dawn with children going about

collecting flowers and singing songs and laughing aloud

for the splendour of women worshiping  earth with flowers

for the melodious movement of girls with rhythm and rhyme

for the green divinity of trees, smiling rice fields and happy earth.
